  1. I think that Jesse is lonley because he feels that he was the one that ws supposed to save kate but he could not. He feels like he is a reject now that he cannot help her his family just ignores him. He lives alone and his family never comes to see him hardly. Hes lonely because his family ignores him alot because they are so worried about Kate. It reminds me of child neglect. I think he starts fire kind of hoping that he will get caught to get attention. Maybe he could cure it by getting attention in a positive way instead of a negative way. Also, I think that Brian is lonely. HE's lonely because i think he feels like he cannot tell Sara how he really feels and he is scared to show his feelings because he thinks he has to be strong for his family. It reminds me of my dad because he doesnt get upset very often but when he does it is really serious and a big problem. He maybe can cure it by finding someone to talk to or maybe telling Sara how he feels and talking it out.

  2. Even though Kate constantly has attention, she is still lonely. Everyone's attention is focused on Kate's disease, not her as a person. For example, the whole family was playing football and Jesse tackled Kate. Everyone was worried that Kate was hurt, but she was just happy to be treated like everyone else. Also, Kate doesn't have a lot of friends. People are uncomfortable with her disease and tend to shy away. Her sister, who is also her best friend, is suing her parents. That has to make her feel even more lonely, because the one person she always counts on appears to no longer be there for her. Kate's loneliness reminds me of some kids who are "popular". No one ever thinks that they would be lonely, but a lot of times they are. Kate can fix her problem by explaining the issue to her parents. She needs to point out to her parents that she is just like every other kid. I think once she voices this, her parents will focus more on her instead of her disease. (I ran out of time so i will have to write about my other character later!)

  3. Jesse is definately really lonely. He feels like his parents don't really care about him because they spend all their time focusing on Kate and partly Anna when they need something from her. Whenever Kate or Anna has to go to the hospital they leave Jesse at home and don't involve him in anything thats going on. I can understand how he would feel left out. His loneliness reminds me of how some one would feel if they lived alone. You just feel like you're in the world but nobody would really notice if you just left. This could easily be cured. Jesse is old enough now that he can come along to the hospital. He wouldn't really be in the way because he's old enough to know better. And if things got complicated enough that only Sara could be with Kate then Jesse could go down to the waiting room.
I think Anna is lonely. The focus is always on Kate and she's just there if she is needed for a medical reason. And even when she's needed for that the focus is still on Kate. For example when they were both in the hospital a while ago for the bone marrow transplant (in 1997) both of the girls were in the hospital but Sara would stay with Kate and not Anna. Even when Anna is calling for her mom and Brian tells her that, Sara only goes down for a few minutes and then goes right back to Kate. It reminds me of high school. How the kids lower down don't get noticed as much as the popular rich kids do. And if they get noticed it's only for a short time then it goes back to the popular one. This can be solved by letting Anna have more attention.

    1. I think all families with a sick child probably go through this, but it sure doesn't make it fair for the other children involved.

  4. Through Jesse's actions it is obvious that he is lonely. Jesse gets involved in negative situations in order to gain attention. I also think he smokes and drinks because he doesn't think anyone else cares about him. Jesse is also lonely because he knows what it is like to be the center of attention. He used to be an only child before his two sisters were born. As soon as Kate was born and then became sick, Jesse was no longer as important. I also think that Jesse sets fires because he knows his dad will have to go and put them out. When his dad isn't home, Jesse becomes the man of the house. In the book, Brian was extinguishing a fire when Kate became ill, and Sara relied on Jesse to help get Kate to the hospital. Once Brian came, Jesse was no longer needed. Jesse's loneliness reminds me of other children that behave negatively in order to be noticed. Some children will do whatever it takes to gain attention. I think Jesse can fix his situation by correcting his negative behaviors. He needs to put his energy into something productive. Maybe he could ask Anna to hang out, that way they can bond. Bonding will help keep them both from being lonely.

  5. anna feels that she is being used and abused for katies well being. she probably feels that she is just number 2 all the time and feels that no one really truly cares about her, well they only care if they need something. Anna is lonely in the sense that she feels that she cannot have friends or a life outside of this huge time bomb that she lives in.

  6. Anna is lonely because she feels that her parents are always paying attention to Kate and not her. She feels that they only talk to her when Kate needs something from her. I also think that Jesse is lonely becuase he is always tring toi do things that get other peoples attention. He starts the fire to get noticed and he does other bad things so that way he sticks out.

  7. Brian feels that he wants to be there for everyone and make them all happy and he tries not to side with anyone but in this perdicament he cant just ignore it and stay out. he really does care for everyones feelings and he is a good hearted person but he doesnt know how he is going to make everything work out right.

  8. I think jesse is very lonley. His parents dont even care what he does anymore. I dont even see them trying to help. Jesse is getting himself in a bad situation by drinking and doing drugs but thats what makes him feel better. He lives on the other side of the house.
I think Brian is lonley even though he is at the fire station all the time and with people. His wife deosnt give him the love he needs.to me it seems she is just another female in the house that is worried about kate. She doesnt pay any attention to him when she does talk to him she is normally yelling at him or just talking about kate. They never have a adult convertion.
