Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe Assignment 1
As we begin the novel, we meet Evelyn. She's overweight, unhappy, and disconnected from her body and self. How do you feel about her? Answer in at leastthree sentences, and then reply to at least two of your peers.
I feel sorry for Evelyn. It doesn't seem like she is happy anymore. When visiting her mother-in-law at the nursing home, she can't wait to leave. I don't think her husband treats her like an equal; she definitely deserves better! As Evelyn realizes that the years have flown by, she feels like she has lost touch with her life. The times have changed, but Evelyn didn't change with the times(meaning Evelyn still holds on to her values, but society's values have changed). It appears that eating relaxes her and also keeps her occupied. I also think she is kind; while at the nursing home she listens to what Mrs. Threadgoode has to say. People at the nursing home are probably lonely, and listening to what they have to say probably helps. Evelyn has come to a point in her life where she is confused and doesn't know what to think or do anymore. I hope she gains some clarity!
I don't know if she wanted to listen to Mrs. Threadgoode at first or if she felt obligated to sit there. I think it'd be pretty cool to be able to listen to what people at the nursing home have to say just because they're so wise and have lived so long.
I agree with Jaclyn, I do not know if she was actually happy to listen to Mrs. Threadgoode or not. Also, how does she know that her husband treats her harshly when he is all that she knows? By the way who blogs at 4:54 am....
I think Evelyn is just lonely. She spends a lot of time in the nursing home but not with anyone she knows. Something is also bothering her because she eats a lot of candy bars... Maybe she's afraid of losing her mother-in-law?
I would agree that something is bothering her, but I wonder what it is? Whenever they talk about her eating candy bars, it makes me hungry; I can't imagine eating that many every day though!
i wondering if we ever find out what is really bothering her or why she eats sooo much candy.. haha jaclyn i sorta wonder the same thing.. when i think of it i think of the movie we watch in language whats eating gilbert grape
Evelyn is just without company to talk to so she is just a lonely person. The nursing home is where she trys to be social i think. she is obviously not happy eating candy bars all the time, people resort to chocolate and food to make them selves feel better. She feels she has no one to go to so she goes to the nursing home to see her mother in law because that is what she has left i feel.
She has a srtessful life and eating all the candy helps her not be so stressful. She seems to be a nice person to me. She seems like she likes to vist the nursing home.
I agree with Colton; Evelyn resorts to eating candy when she is stressed. I also agree with Chris; all of the candy that she is eating is really bad for her. I wonder if Evelyn has any current health issues or if she will have any by the end of the story.
I think that Evelyn is a lonely old lady who just needs some friends. She has had a rough childhood and is grumpy about that part of her life. I think she is having troubles letting go of her past and moving on. Also, I think she is stressed out because she is unhealthy and overweight but eats her problems away on candy bars. I feel bad for the poor lady! :(
Evelyn is an extremely lonely and stressed old lady who needs friends. Her constant candy cravings shows how she is coping with the situation, yet this behavior is self destructing. I either think that life does not treat her well or she does not let it treat her well.
I almost pity her. She's so unhappy with her life, her marriage, and herself. Though I think it's ironic how she ends up going to the home specifically to see Ms. Threadgoode when at first she seemed annoyed by her random jabber.
